Conventional Commits is a specification for writing structured git commit messages. Each message starts with a type (feat, fix, etc.), an optional scope in parentheses, and a short description. This format powers automatic changelog generation and semantic versioning tools like semantic-release.

What does the scope field do?

The scope is an optional label that describes which part of the codebase the change affects — for example (auth), (api), or (ui). It appears in parentheses after the commit type: feat(auth): add OAuth login.

When should I use a breaking change?

Mark a commit as a breaking change when your change is not backward-compatible — for example, removing an API endpoint, renaming a required parameter, or changing a return type. Breaking changes trigger a major version bump in semantic versioning (e.g. 1.0.0 to 2.0.0).

What is semantic versioning impact?

Conventional commits map to semantic version bumps: feat triggers a minor version bump (1.0.0 to 1.1.0), fix and perf trigger a patch bump (1.0.0 to 1.0.1), any commit with a breaking change triggers a major bump (1.0.0 to 2.0.0). Other types like docs, style, and chore do not trigger a version bump.
